Photo guide: get a usable celebrity face match

Choose a clear single-person portrait, troubleshoot a missing face, and understand why lighting and framing change the results.

Last updated: 2026-10-23

A clear photo helps the detector find and align your face. It does not guarantee a strong resemblance to anyone in the current celebrity library.

A useful starting photo

Use a recent, unfiltered, front-facing portrait with one face, open eyes, and even light. Keep the whole face visible, including the chin and forehead. A head-and-shoulders crop is a useful starting point; you do not need a formal ID photo. Remove sunglasses and avoid strong beauty filters or face-altering effects.

Choose an ordinary portrait that you have permission to use. Do not upload a passport, identity document, a child’s photo, or a photo containing information you do not want to send for processing.

What the upload accepts

  • JPG, PNG, or WebP, up to 8 MB before compression.
  • Up to 20 million decoded pixels. A highly compressed image can still exceed this pixel limit.
  • Your browser rotates the image as needed and converts it to a JPEG with a maximum edge of 1280 pixels, capped at 2 MB.
  • HEIC, GIF, PDF, and SVG are not accepted. Convert HEIC locally to JPG before selecting it.
  • Selecting a photo prepares a local preview. Upload starts only when you press the match button.

If the finder cannot detect a face

| Message or situation | What to try | | ------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | No face found in a clear close-up | Add a little space around the head rather than cropping through the forehead or chin. Try another clear portrait if the problem persists. | | Face is too small | Crop the original image around the person, keeping the whole head. Enlarging a tiny or blurry face does not restore missing detail. | | More than one face | Choose a solo portrait or crop out every other face, including faces in posters or screens. | | Strong side angle or sunglasses | Use a more front-facing photo with the eyes visible. | | Dark, backlit, or heavily filtered image | Use even daylight and a photo without face-altering filters. | | Unsupported or oversized file | Export a smaller JPG, PNG, or WebP. Do not merely change the filename extension. | | Service still preparing or temporarily busy | Leave the current request open. Avoid repeated submissions; the model may need time to wake after an idle period. |

The close-up detector was revised after a real report of a missed large face. Regression checks cover close-up crops of licensed public portraits, blank images, and multiple faces. These checks do not mean every ID-style photo will work. See the test report.

If a result does not look like you

The tool returns the nearest available faces, so it can produce a weak result when your closest resemblance is absent from the library. A score is not a percentage of how much you resemble a person. Angle, expression, lighting, glasses, and camera processing can also change the ranking.

Try one other evenly lit portrait rather than selecting only the result you prefer from many attempts. Do not use this entertainment result for identity checks or decisions about a person.

Photo privacy and help

The compressed photo is sent to the website and private face service for in-memory processing. It is not saved by the application or used for training. Read the full data flow and privacy policy before uploading.

If a clear photo repeatedly fails, contact support@whatcelebritydoilooklike.com with the displayed error and approximate time. Please do not attach your face photo or identity document.
